I recently had the honor of being interviewed by Holly Buchanan, Author and Founder of Market and Sell to Women.

She inteWomen celebratingrviewed me about my book, Money, Manifestation & Miracles.  Here’s the article:

If you’ve ever spent time around women, you know they are constantly talking about their relationships. Women share all sorts of details and intimacies. But there is one relationship they almost never talk about, at least publicly – their relationship with money.

I’ve spent the last decade studying how men and women make financial decisions.  I’ve noticed some interesting patterns, particularly in how women approach money. Or in some cases, avoid money.   I’m always looking for new insights on what women can do to have a better relationship with money.   I found a great resource in Meriflor Toneatto.

Money, Manifestation & Miracles  – 8 Holistic Principles for Transforming Women’s Relationship with Money is a new book by Meriflor Toneatto.

Meriflor provides coaching, tools and strategies for women who are ready to release their limiting beliefs and blocks regarding  money.   These beliefs hold them back from maximizing their earning power and increasing their self-worth and net worth.

As Meriflor points out: “Your emotional state will ultimately determine your financial state. The way you do money is the way you do everything in your life.”  She makes some interesting analogies.

Parallel’s of money and the rest of your life:

  • Are you wasteful with money? = Do you squander away your time?
  • Do you know the exact amount that is in your savings account? = Do you have an accurate picture of your physical health?
  • Do you ever feel like you have enough money? = Do you have enough time or physical vitality?

It’s these kinds of insights that make Money, Manifestation & Miracles a fascinating read.   I had the privilege of sitting down with Meriflor Toneatto to talk about her book and her work.   Here are some of the highlights.

What’s holding women back from being more financially prosperous?

Meriflor:  “If your relationship with money is left unexamined, it can keep you stuck, experiencing a cycle of money drama and act as a barrier to realizing your full potential, purpose and mission in life. The key method to transforming ourselves is through awareness, clarity and an understanding of our relationship with money.”

I found the advice in the book especially powerful for women professionals and entrepreneurs.   This is a group Meriflor is passionate about working with.

Meriflor:  “What holds many women entrepreneurs and professionals back from making the kind of income they desire and deserve has little to do with their motivation, drive, or intelligence.  It has to do with their relationship with money.”

Meriflor’s book contains great advice on how to ask for what you’re worth, how to value your time and services, and how to align your value, your work and your money.

Differences between how men and women approach money

Meriflor – “For women, money is about relationships and how they can use money to take care of themselves, share it or give it away. Money also provides security and experiences.  On the other hand, for men, money is a means to an end.  It signifies power and position, playing out in competition and accumulation.”

I’ve seen this in my research as well.  For many women, it’s not just about becoming “rich.”  They care about having enough money to live a life of quality and meaning.  Money provides women not only with security, but with more and better choices.

The first step to true financial freedom is to really look at your often complicated relationship with money.

Meriflor believes this is the key to empowering women.  In her book she  gives you specific steps for how you can uncover your money story and be more mindful not only of what financial decisions you make, but why you make them.

How to overcome avoidance and fear

There is a lot of talk about women avoiding money.   Some say it is out of fear.  Others say it is simply a priority issue because she has so many other important matters competing for her attention.  Others say it is a lack of confidence.   Whatever the reason, Meriflor makes an important point about women who fear or avoid money:

Meriflor:  “By not attending to and understanding and processing the problem, it simply dose not go away.”

Her recommendation is to get more clarity on your situation and your money beliefs.

Meriflor:  “More clarity equals reduced concern.”

The secret to clarity is – if you take  an honest look at your situation, you can actually do something about it.

Meriflor:  “To be financially prosperous you have to face your fears and get past them.  You have to say, ‘You know what, I’m not liking my money habits and actions and really want to change them.’    When women face their fears head on, they often say, ‘That wasn’t so bad.’  When that happens, women become unstoppable.”

Abundance vs. Scarcity mindset

One of the most powerful lessons of Money, Manifestation & Miracles is what happens when you move from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset.  And it has nothing to do with the amount in your bank account.  This is how you move from the “money” part to the  “manifestation and miracles” part.  It’s worth reading the book for this information alone.

I think this quote from Suze Orman featured in the book sums it up nicely.

“Money behaves and responds just like a person – nurture it, treat it well, and it will grow and flourish; treat it carelessly, or with disrespect, and it will dwindle away to nothing.” Suze Orman
